BRONCO
FRESHMAN BOUNCE BACK AGAINST IOWA
The SHHS Bronco
freshman baseball team bounced back
from a rare loss to defeat the Iowa
Yellowjackets 5-2 Wednesday night at
Iowa. Eric Peterson (2 rbi), Derek
LaPorte (1 run), and Blake Caswell
(2b) each had two hits in the win.
Sam Houston scored all the
runs they would need in the 4th
inning. Kameron Esthay led off the
inning with a walk, then advanced to
third base on a bunt single and
error by Evan Campbell. Eric
Peterson then laced a single to left
to drive in both runners. Adam Chase
followed with a stand-up triple to
plate Peterson. Chase then scored
when Blaise McCoy’s grounder to the
third baseman drew a throw home to
no avail. Caswell drove in McCoy to
put the Broncos up 4-0 after he had
advanced to second base on a LaPorte
single. Following a two run 5th
inning by the Yellowjackets, Sam
Houston capped their scoring with a
single run in the 6th on
Caswell’s double that drove in his
second run of the game.
The Broncos had excellent
pitching during the night. Staring
pitcher Kameron Esthay (WP) threw 4
1/3rd inning of 2 run (1
earned) ball. He struck out eight
while allowing four hits and one
walk. Derek LaPorte (SV) followed
him to the mound for the final 2 2/3rd
innings of work, striking out the
first seven batters he faced. The
only batter that reached base did so
via a HBP. The game ended when
Iowa’s 2nd place hitter
lined out to second baseman Zach
Rome. Collin Kober and Esthay also
added hits for the team.
