FRESHMAN Broncos Sweep Season Series vs ST LOUIS

The Sam Houston freshman baseball team ran their season record to 18-2 with a 5-1 victory over the St Louis Saints Monday afternoon at Legion Field. This was classic baseball with neither team giving the fans any ideas of a blowout. It didn’t start out great for the Saints as the Broncos put a 3-spot on the board in the first inning. With one out in the top of the inning, Zach Rome (1 hit, 1 run) drew a walk. Eric Peterson promptly lined a single to left field and advanced to second on a single by Evan Campbell. Kameron Esthay walked to bring in the first run of the game for the Broncos. Adam Chase (2 for 4, 2 rbi) then laced the first pitch he saw down the right field line to drive in two more runs.

Campbell started on the mound and set the tone by striking out four Saints in the first two innings. He was toiling with a fastball that he was spotting well and then bringing a hard breaking curveball to keep them off-balance. St Louis did manage to break through with a run in the bottom of the third inning to tighten up the game. The score stayed that way until Cody Andreas provided some breathing room with a pinch-hit single to drive in Blaise McCoy who had singled to open the inning. Colin Kober then tacked on more insurance with a sharp base hit up the middle that scored Andreas. Blake Caswell also added a hit and a sacrifice bunt for SHHS.

Campbell closed it out by striking out the last batsman for St Louis.
