Varsity vs St Louis - 04/10

At this time of the year, every game is the biggest.  Saturday’s contest versus St. Louis matched the top 2 teams in District 5-4A.  After the dust settled, the Broncos came out with a 3 game lead with only 5 to play, beating the Saints 16-6 in 6 innings.   After spotting the Saints a 2-0 lead after 1 inning, the Broncos scored two of their own in the top of the second.  Garrett Logan started the attack with a single, Billy Sommers was then hit by a pitch, and “DJ’ Johnson moved them both over with a sacrifice bunt.  Chance Terrell, (who was courtesy running for the catcher Logan) and Sommers both scored as Dylan Champagne smoked a double into the gap knotting the score at 2 a piece.  The next two Sam Houston batters went down to bring the Saints up in their half of the inning.  The Saints then scored two of their own to make the score 4-2 leading to the Bronco third.  In that inning, like it has been all year, the Broncos broke the game open.  Donovan Landry walked, Evan Powell hit a single, Ethan Logan hit a single, G-Lo then hit a double plating Landry and Powell.  Sommers then hit a single driving in E-Lo, DJ reached on a fielder’s choice that saw Terrell (running for G-Lo) tagged out at home.  Champagne then hit a tailor made double play ball that the Saints shortstop threw over the head of the 2nd baseman into right field allowing Sommers and DJ to score.  Blake Felts then laid down a beauty of a bunt moving Chase Guillory (running for the pitcher Champagne) to third.  With speed on the corners, Landry slapped a single to the right center gap scoring Guillory.  Powell then ripped another single scoring Felts. E-Lo then hit a one hopper to the Saints 3rd baseman and it went between his legs scoring Landry.  G-Lo scorched another double to the gap scoring Powell.  Sommers finished the scoring in the third with his second single of the inning driving in both E-Lo and Terrell who again was running for G-Lo to make the score 13-4.  Bronco pitcher Dylan Champagne then came out of the dugout nice and relaxed and settled into a good rhythm only giving up 2 runs in the next 4 innings.  The Broncos score 3 more runs, one in the 5th as Sommers hit a ball off the left field wall that went behind one of the signs hanging on the fence for a ground rule double that scored Terrell who was running for G-Lo who had walked.  The Broncos scored 2 more in the 6th as Landry, Powell, and G-Lo all drew walks.  Landry scored on a wild pitch and Powell scored on a ground out to 2nd by Sommers.

Dylan Champagne pitched the entire game for the Broncos giving up 8 hits, walking 5, and striking out 5.  Top Bronco hitters were Landry, 1-2 2 walks 3 runs scored, Powell 2-3 2 walks, 3 runs scored 2 rbi’s, G-Lo 3-4  3 runs scored, 2 doubles, 4 rbi’s, Sommers 3-4 2 runs scored, 4 rbi’s, Champagne 2-4 2 doubles.
